SELF-PUBLISHED COFFEE TABLE BOOK
DESCRIPTION
This coffee table book is a collection of my art and photography from my time pursuing an AAS in Professional Photography. It served as the centerpiece of my portfolio during graduation and was the main accompaniment to my resume while doing job interviews post graduation. It wouldn’t be a stretch by any means to say that the material and polished final outcome of this book helped me land my current job assisting photographer Jason Dewey.
BRIEF
I made this book not only to help myself get a job, but also to establish myself as a legitimate artist. By displaying my portfolio in a tangible, approachable, yet hopefully also surprisingly sophisticated manner, I wanted to bring something personal into the hands of my audience. When you pick up this book, I want you to know a bit about who I am as an artist by the end of it, not just as a student.
IMPACTS/AWARDS
-The book was well praised and purchased by art dealer, and fellow Seattle native, Larry at Fiore Fine Arts in Aspen, CO.
-I can credit my work in this book, most notably Chapter 3 (Man-Made Lines), for impressing multiple real estate photographers, and getting me a few job offers.

VERSIONS/TESTING
I used transparent PNG files, however some backgrounds didn’t match the luster black of the paper on the initial print run. So, I went back to these files and turned the individual images into one larger Photoshop file that was then dropped into InDesign. This was a simple way to override the paper black.
WHAT WENT WRONG...
-Even though I always worked within the margins that Blurb’s InDesign plugin gave me, there were small inconsistencies with their printing. So, I would always recommend a little breathing room when working with spines and tight margins.
-Unfortunately, Blurb had to reprint my book a few different times due to scuff marks and damages from their shipping process. Luckily they were very prompt to respond to my complaints and reprint my book, which gave me the opportunity to fix a few of my own errors in the design.
